IBMA Announces Momentum Awards Nominees

The International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) has announced the nominees for the Momentum Awards. Each artist was chosen by committees through a multi-stage process involving both musicians and music industry leaders.

Nominees include Ricky Skaggs, Mo Pitney, Jim Lauderdale and the Lil’ Smokies. Instituted in 2012, the Momentum Awards were created to recognize both musicians and bluegrass industry professionals who have contributed to the advancement bluegrass music.

“One of the distinctive features of the bluegrass world is that the peak years of careers are often measured in decades, even as we welcome an abundance of new artists and industry professionals into the ranks,” Jon Weisberger, IBMA board chair, explains. “So as our top artists and professionals continue to enjoy recognition from their peers through its annual awards, the IBMA’s Board of Directors saw a need to salute some of the best and brightest among those who are closer to the beginnings of their careers, and created the Momentum Awards — noteworthy for including not just singers, pickers and bands, but events or venues and professionals — as a vehicle for drawing attention to their achievements.

Town Mountain is Honored to be Nominated For
“Emerging Artist of the Year”
In This Fall’s International Bluegrass Music Association’s Awards

We are thrilled to announce that Town Mountain has been nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2014 Award for “Emerging Artist of The Year.” This nomination follows last years honor of receiving IBMA Momentum Awards for “Band of the Year” and lead singer Robert Greer for “Vocalist of the Year..” The members of Town Mountain have thought long and hard about their cultivated roots music groove with strong focus on crafting original material. “Without doubt, this band has fine writing chops,” writes Donald Teplyske in the Lonesome Road Review.
The sound of the award-winning group Town Mountain can best be described as traditional bluegrass, albeit with a rough-hewn side to it that is not too slick or glossy. They are a band of the here-and-now, yet they have a groove that is based on the bluesy and swinging sounds explored by the first generation of bluegrass pioneers of the last century. With the success of their latest album, Leave The Bottle, the word is out with some of their best reviews yet. Town Mountain was formed out of the fertile music scene of Asheville, located in the mountains of western North Carolina. After recording their first two albums, Town Mountain signed with Pinecastle Records label. That led to a pair of acclaimed recordings with 2011’s Steady Operator as well as Leave The Bottle. Both projects were produced by Mike Bub, a recipient of five IBMA Bass Player of the Year awards as well as many other IBMA honors won during his time with the Del McCoury Band. The members of Town Mountain have thought long and hard about their cultivated roots music groove. The group has focused on the goal of creating a unique sound and brand while still giving a nod and a wink to the traditional side of the bluegrass genre.

Possible future Dobro Meeting and Jam

Hi folks…..It has been awhile since I talked with or seen many of you. As you may know, Dick Blattenberger was honored at the ResoGat in Wilkesboro, NC in July.

That was a wonderful experience for me and Jan to visit there and be part of the group of folks that recognized Dick.

Mike Esposito and Larry Maltz were key persons at the event plus Randy Getz was also there. These folks attended a number of our Dobro Meetings at St Paul UMC in Hellertown Pa. in the past.

Locally, this year, we didn’t do anything regarding the Dick Blattenberger Award…Lynn Peters and I agreed that this award sort of lost it’s purpose, as it became more difficult to properly honor “local” Dobro Folks and to go more far reaching it would be difficult to award distant folks and then expect them to come here for a presentation. I must thank Joe Sullivan and AFBA for their invitation to have another Dobro Tent at the 2014 Festival. I declined due to present circumstances. Last year we presented this award to Mike Esposito at AFBA Festival.

Recently a few people asked me if I would consider having a “Reunion” type Dobro Meeting again, since some of the folks that attended these meetings in the past said they enjoyed the get togethers and the jamming and the things they learned and heard.

I am considering this……..but need some feedback from you.

If I do schedule a meeting I will make sure Dick Blattenberger will attend. I know he would enjoy seeing and talking with each of you…..and maybe we could get him to teach us a few of the “old timey” licks …rolls…..slides or harmonics. Each of you are equally important to the success of any Dobro Meeting so if you want to spend some Saturday afternoon at St Paul UMC in Hellertown in the not too distant future

to pick…sing……jam…laugh and enjoy Dobro Stuff………give me your thoughts on this.

If we have a Reunion Meeting………..the refreshment will be only coffee and tea and soda……and some home made cookies…Jan will bake. I don’t want to burden the “gals” that prepped the food in the past…plus one of the “Kitchen Gals”….Ruthy Saylor ( Dick Saylor’s wife) passed away a few months ago.

Think this over……look at your schedule if you are interested in “gathering” again and let me know if you would attend another Dobro Meeting.

We think of you often….remembering the “fun times” at the Dobro Meetings.
